Who is at risk for breast implant illness?

October 29, 2025

Transcript

Breast implant illness is when an individual who has undergone breast augmentation or reconstructive surgery with implants experiences a range of unpleasant symptoms.

There is not a lot of research-based evidence that proves why certain women develop breast implant illness.

However, researchers believe the risk of experiencing it increases under certain circumstances. This includes having a history of autoimmune diseases, whether personally or within the family, as well as dealing with chronic conditions such as fibromyalgia. Additionally, individuals with numerous allergies or a diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome seem to be at a heightened risk.

Factors such as the type of implants used, the body’s response to foreign materials, and any underlying health conditions may contribute to the risk of developing breast implant illness.

Additionally, the longevity of the implants and any complications that arise post-surgery can also increase the risk. It is essential for individuals considering breast augmentation to thoroughly research the procedure, discuss their medical history with a qualified healthcare professional, and weigh the potential benefits against the risks involved.
