What is a urinary tract infection (UTI)?

June 30, 2025

Transcript

Urinary tract infections or UTI are caused by bacteria entering the urethra and in fact, in the urinary tract. The most common type is bladder infection or cystitis, while kidney infections or pyelonephritis are less common but more severe. Bacteria from the skin or the rectum are usually responsible for UTIs.

Symptoms of UTIs may include pain or burning during urination, frequent urination, cloudy or strong-smelling urine, and pelvic pain. UTIs are treated with antibiotics. It’s important to finish the full course of medication even if symptoms go away. Drinking plenty of water and urinating frequently can help prevent UTIs and practicing good hygiene can reduce the risk of infection.
