How is a urinalysis performed?

June 30, 2025

Transcript

Urinalysis usually involves collecting a urine sample, which can be done at home or at a doctor’s office. A container will be provided for the sample and you may be asked to collect it first thing in the morning when your urine is more concentrated. The clean catch method involves cleansing the urinary opening and passing a container into your urine midstream.

You should collect at least one to two ounces of urine in the container and deliver it as directed by your healthcare provider. If you can’t deliver the sample within 60 minutes, you should refrigerate it. In some cases, a catheter may be used to collect the urine sample, the urine sample is sent to the lab for analysis, and you can resume your usual activities immediately after providing the sample.
