Breast implant illness is an, as of yet, poorly understood condition experienced by individuals who have undergone breast augmentation or reconstructive surgery with implants.
These symptoms vary widely but may include fatigue, joint and muscle pain, cognitive dysfunction, and autoimmune disorders.
The exact cause of breast implant illness is not fully understood nor is its relationship to the implants yet established. One leading theory is that there is a relationship between the body’s immune response to the implants, but this has not yet been proven.
Some individuals may experience a condition called Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL), this is is a rare type of cancer that can develop in the scar tissue surrounding the implant but is different from breast implant illness.
Diagnosis of breast implant illness can be challenging as symptoms vary widely and may overlap with other health conditions. Treatment typically involves the removal of the implants, which can lead to improvement or resolution of symptoms in some cases, but unfortunately not all.
It is important for individuals experiencing symptoms after breast augmentation or reconstruction to consult with a healthcare professional quickly for a proper evaluation and medical advice.
