What is recovery after breast implant removal like?

October 29, 2025

Transcript

In the initial days following breast implant removal, patients should expect varying degrees of discomfort, swelling, and bruising within the first 24 to 48 hours.

They should take prescribed pain medication. They should sleep in an elevated position to help minimize swelling.

Rest is crucial during this phase; patients must avoid strenuous activities.

In the first weeks post-surgery, activities should be kept to a minimum, this is crucial for the first 5 days. It is important to refrain from raising your arms above the shoulders for the first 10 days. After two weeks, the full range of motion of the arms can be resumed, but lifting should be limited to ten pounds or less for six weeks.

Heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling objects weighing ten pounds or more should be avoided for six weeks. At around 6 to 8 weeks post-op, strenuous activities can gradually be reintroduced.

It is important to wear a supportive surgical bra for compression. Dressings, such as medical-grade tape and gauze over stitches, can protect incision sites. Keeping these sites clean and dry is also essential to prevent infection.

Surgeons typically recommend gently cleaning incision sites with mild soap and water and patting them dry. It is important to avoid excessive moisture and to follow any wound care instructions.

To have a successful recovery, it is crucial to minimize discomfort and swelling and ensure proper hygiene and wound care.
