How is an IUD inserted?

June 26, 2025

Transcript

Before getting an IUD, your healthcare provider will ask you some questions about your medical history, perform a physical examination, including checking your vagina, cervix and uterus. They may also test you for sexually transmitted infection. They will do a pregnancy test.

To insert the IUD, your provider will use a speculum to hold your vaginal walls open and special inserter to place the IUD through the opening of the cervix into the uterus. The process typically takes about five minutes and can be done at any point in your menstrual cycle.

While the procedure is generally safe and quick, some people may experience some cramping or pain during insertion. There is a small risk of fainting. To help manage discomfort, your healthcare provider may offer pain medication or local numbing medicine. It’s a good idea to have someone accompany you to appointment and plan to rest for the rest of the day.

Overall, IUDs are highly effective form of birth control that can last for several years, but are also reversible if you decide to have them removed.
